Tips for Growing a Vegetable Garden

Gardening is a very relaxing as well as a rewarding hobby. Though it may seem tough, it is not very difficult to grow and maintain a vegetable garden. If you are planning to grow a vegetable garden at your backyard, here are some tips which you can follow.

First and foremost you need to decide what are the different types of crops that can be grown and whether you want to grow a single type of vegetable or grow several different types together. Also you have to think about the place where you want your garden. A 15×20 foot plot will be a good size for a three or four member family. For a beginner, it is advisable that you start out small as this way you can try different alternatives and experiment and see what type of gardening techniques suits you.

Plan the layout of the bed and initially grow those vegetables which are easier to grow and also those which you like. Vegetables like carrots, squash, lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, beets and beans are good choices for a small vegetable garden. Before you plant the seeds, do a research on the corps – what kind of weather is required, how much water they need and other necessary information. There are several books, journals and guides on plants to which you can refer to.

Secondly, choosing the right spot for your garden is very important. The place should get enough sunlight and adequate wind so that the plants can grow healthily. Most of the vegetables needs around 7 to 8 hours of sunlight; again too much of wind can damage the crops. Sometimes you can build artificial barriers like a fence or a structure to protect the plants.

The condition of the soil is another important factor that should be taken into consideration before you plant the seeds. If the soil is not properly prepared, the vegetables will not grow properly. The fall is the most suitable time to prepare the soil and make the vegetable garden ready. You should get rid of all the weed, stones, sticks etc. and thoroughly air the soil with the help of a tiller or other tools. You can also add fertilizers for healthy growth of the plants. It is best to use organic fertilizers as it is not only healthier for the plants but also eco-friendly. When planting the seeds, also remember to keep sufficient gaps between the rows so that each of the plants will get enough nutrients.
